Spectrum News: Inside the Restoration of Albany Capitol's Eastern Approach
November 10, 2025
The New York State Capitol’s historic Eastern Approach staircase is undergoing a major $72 million restoration after being closed for over a decade due to severe water damage and structural deterioration.
The project, led by the Office of General Services and contractor Allegrone Companies, involves dismantling, cataloging, and repairing 125-year-old granite pieces, using original stored stone for seamless repairs. Once complete, the staircase and surrounding promenades will be waterproofed and reopened, restoring a key architectural landmark and public gathering space. This effort is part of a broader plan to preserve the Capitol’s Victorian grandeur and address long-deferred maintenance.
