Rehabilitation of the New York State Capitol

The New York State Capitol Eastern Approach Rehabilitation project involves a comprehensive restoration of the Capitol’s eastern side, including the north and south promenades, executive drive, east portico, and East Capitol Park. 

 

The work includes reconstructing the historic staircase, balustrades, retaining walls, and underlying steel support systems; replacing weatherproofing and storm drainage infrastructure; installing new security fencing and gates; cleaning, repairing, and repointing all granite elements; reconstructing deteriorated landings; adding structural supports to stairs and landings; replacing windows and doors with historically accurate replicas; and conserving the original bronze lamps. The project uses a meticulous preservation approach, with existing granite elements documented, removed, repaired, and reinstalled in their original locations to maintain the historic character of the New York State Capitol while improving structural integrity, public safety, and long-term durability. The rehabilitation is expected to restore public access to the Eastern Approach and East Capitol Park upon completion.
