Allegrone will be the general contractor for the rehabilitation project of the James A. Bowes Building in Pittsfield. The building is a 19th-century stone building that houses the Middle District Registry of Deeds and Berkshire County Probate and Family Court. The building was constructed in 1876 as the city’s library over time the stone walls have begun to bow outward due to a design flaw. These walls will be reinforced in sections with concrete to strengthen them.
“Mike Mucci, project superintendent with Allegrone, said the stone façade will be cleaned with attention to preserving historic details, and much of the stonework will be dismantled, marked for placement and then reassembled over a 12-month period.
Other work will include bringing restrooms and the front and rear entrances up to Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, a new fire alarm system, roof work, renovations throughout the offices, a ventilation system upgrade, modifications to the elevator, interior door replacements and installation of an emergency generator.”
