Final Phase of Naumkeag's Restoration: The Chinese Garden
September 11, 2015

The Chinese Garden marks the end of our 5-part restoration project at the historic Naumkeag property.

Fletcher Steele and Mabel Choate nourished personal interests in Chinese design in gardens, architecture, and decorative arts. As collectors and theorists, the two influenced each other’s application of the Chinese Garden at Naumkeag. Construction of the garden began as early as 1917, with the creation of the garden’s Temple, and continued on with the completion of the Moon Gate in 1955. Small improvements and maintenance to the gardens have kept the area fresh and inviting to visitors till this day.
The Chinese Garden marks the end of our 5-part restoration project at the historic Naumkeag property. The restoration began with laying out the existing material for the rebuild phase of the work. All the site work and masonry restoration will take place in the fall, and the final steps of landscape installation will begin in the spring. Guests will look forward to the garden’s reopening, summer 2016.
