Doris Duke Theatre Awarded 2026 Wood in Architecture
June 10, 2026
Nestled within a forest clearing in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, the newly reimagined Doris Duke Theatre at Jacob's Pillow stands as a striking example of how architecture can enhance artistic expression while embracing sustainability. Recognized in the 2026 WoodWorks Awards for excellence in wood design, the theatre showcases the transformative potential of mass timber in contemporary cultural spaces.
As one of the three primary performance venues at Jacob's Pillow, an internationally renowned dance center and festival, the Doris Duke Theatre was designed to support a wide range of artistic experiences. The 19,300-square-foot facility features a flexible, double-height auditorium with seating for 230 guests, alongside multi-purpose gathering spaces, artist support areas, and advanced production infrastructure. In addition to its architectural and environmental benefits, the project demonstrates the efficiency of modern timber construction. The mass timber structure was erected in just six weeks, illustrating how prefabricated timber systems can accelerate project timelines while delivering exceptional design quality.
For project partners, including structural engineer TYLin and general contractor Allegrone Companies, the theatre represents an important example of wood's expanding role in public and cultural architecture.
