Blue Hills Observatory

The Blue Hills Observatory is a National Historic Landmark and a Centennial Observing Station as recognized by the World Meteorological Organization. It is the foremost structure associated with the history of weather observations in the United States, home to the oldest continuous weather record in North America; the location of the earliest kite soundings of the atmosphere in North American in the 1890s; as well as the development of the radiosonde in the 1930s.

The Observatory underwent a complete restoration. The project consists of but not limited to: historic stone masonry restoration, historic decorative metal cleaning and refinishing, historic wood repair, roofing and sheet metal flashing and trim, historic treatment of wood doors and windows, restoration of historic plaster finishes, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, asbestos abatement, specialty weather instrumentation work, and improvements for ADA access to a National Historic Landmark structure located at the top of Great Blue Hill.

One of the more challenging aspects of this project was the restoration of the Observatory's concrete tower. Due to the age of the building, our team had to expose the tower's structural core and restructure it to be more structurally sound, while adhering to today’s building codes.
