Allegrone construction projects

Masonry

Williams College Fitch Hall

Like many of Allegrone Masonry's projects, this project had a tight timeline; it began in June 2007 and had to be ready for late August in time for the new academic year. The project's architect determined that everything was to be replaced “in kind” with new materials that matched the existing structure. Allegrone Masonry had to remove the existing parapet; the wall was eventually replaced with new brick and terracotta. But as with any restoration project, there were many unanticipated elements with which the masons had to contend. Given the building's age, water had penetrated the brick along the building's top story and had damaged its overall integrity.

Allegrone Masonry had to temporarily shore the structural steel supports for the roof's concrete slab. After the complete demolition of this section of the building, Allegrone Masonry had to install an intricate stainless steel anchoring system for the new cornice. To ensure the structural integrity of the building for the next 100 years, new concrete blocks were placed to provide a proper substrate for the brick façade.  As is typical of Allegrone Masonry's projects, the goal was to restore the building without any loss to its original character.  This was achieved while also bringing the building up to the appropriate code and safety standards.
