The Historic Howard Building's Revival Continues

As the once known as Howard Block building nears its adaptive reuse completion into its new life as high end residences and retail, the signage as it appeared in the early 1900’s is photographed by Berkshire Eagle staff as we work to bring it back to life.    http://photos.berkshireeagle.com/2014/04/18/photos-of-the-howard-building-sign-restoration/#1

Treasured Memories Revealed: The Howard Building, Then and Now

Howard

As she walked into the old, but new again building on First Street between Fenn and Federal, Holly Stover-Howard had much to say about what she remembered about the old Howard building and marveled at the new and restored one. She told the stories of her childhood – running down the hallways and up the old staircases, counting inventory of nails and screws from the first floor to the third, she brought us back to another time and place.

The Howard: Back to the Original Plans

The Howard

Constructed in 1916 in the Classical Revival Style, which was typical for the era, The Howard Building was originally constructed to house a hardware and agricultural implement business which catered to the surrounding farms and the great estates of the rural Berkshires. The Howard, a popular Pittsfield staple, sold tools, dairy & poultry supplies as well as other important farming implements. But it was best known as a seed company, annually producing a seed catalogue, which it published through 1960 issuing 10,000 copies that year alone. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 2010, The Howard Building was purchased by Allegrone Construction as a Historic Redevelopment project. It is fast becoming one of the most exciting and transformative real estate projects in Downtown Pittsfield. So, you can imagine our delight when Holly Stover the granddaughter of Frank Howard, contacted us with the original plans.

Two New Buildings Change the Look of Downtown Pittsfield

The Onota and The Howard

A $12 million redevelopment of the Howard Block and the Onota Building, (both prominent fixtures of downtown Pittsfield), will increase the supply of downtown market-rate rental apartments by about 39 new units over the next two years. Street-level commercial space will also be available.

We are all MAKERS with the power to build resilient communities.

Our team had a wonderful time participating in Yo-Yo Ma’s “Day of Action”, where teams of local businesses and organizations united under a single tent to build tables for the community. The tables are made from local ash trees and inscribed with local responses that complete the phrase “The Berkshires make...”. #yoyoma #dayofaction #community #intheberkshires
Earlier this week we celebrated the completion of Berkshire Place’s new independent living community, known as 89 South. #intheberkshires

Allegrone Companies provided design-build services for the three-story, Richardsonian Romanesque building located in the heart of Pittsfield. The new space houses 18 living units, primarily one- and two-bedroom setups, all of which express the 21st century historic character and new-age transitional design while offering the latest technologies. #historic #seniorlivingcommunity
