Berkshire Athenaeum - Stone Number 1,516

p

Allegrone Masonry raises and lays the 1,516th and final stone into place at the historic Berkshire Athenaeum building in Pittsfield's Park Squre.

Scaffolding has concealed the exterior of the Berkshire Athenaeum building for several months as Allegrone Masonry has worked carefully and diligently to repair the deteriorated stone facade.  The existing stone wall was labelled, inventoried, disassembled, and reinstalled from July 15, 2014 through October 25, 2014.  In this time, Allegrone Masonry laid 1,516 stones and placed by hand 123 yards of vertical, one sided, structurally reinforced concrete.

Scaffolding will be removed this week, returning the historic building as a focal point of Park Square!  Work will continue elsewhere within the building through Spring 2015.

Old Berkshire Athenaeum Project in the News

The historic Old Berkshire Athenaeum building, currently being restored by Allegrone, seeks to hold onto its past while embracing its future.

The Historical Commission is hoping a photo taken in 1886 of the historic building can be located and turned into a wall-sized mural to be hung inside the main entrance of the restored building.

We are all MAKERS with the power to build resilient communities.

Our team had a wonderful time participating in Yo-Yo Ma’s “Day of Action”, where teams of local businesses and organizations united under a single tent to build tables for the community. The tables are made from local ash trees and inscribed with local responses that complete the phrase “The Berkshires make...”. #yoyoma #dayofaction #community #intheberkshires
