The Sarcophagus of Song Shaozu

Last summer, the Clark Art Institute held an exhibition entitled “Unearthed.” The main attraction of the exhibition was a 5th Century, Chinese sarcophagus, built for Song Shaozu. The tomb was uncovered in the northern city of Datong by workers constructing dorms at a local college. Found fully intact and built in the style of the dwellings typical for the 5th Century, the tomb is a representation of what an ancient Chinese home looked like.

Preservation Mass Tsongas Awards 2013

Progress Report: New Headquarters for the Iredale Mineral Cosmetics Company

The Iredale Mineral Cosmetics construction project was started in September of 2011 and is an adaptive reuse of the former Bryant Middle School in Great Barrington MA. This 25,000sq. full renovation, is to become the new headquarters for Iredale Mineral Cosmetics LTD. Significant work completed thus far, includes an exterior glass enclosed elevator tower (seen to the left in photo), extensive reuse of original maple flooring, a new sprinkler system, seismic reinforcements and last but not least, the removal of 50% of the existing roof, which was then replaced to create a expanded third floor. The Owner will seek LEED certification for this project.

Algae Power? The First Algae Powered Building

The Bio Intelligent Quotient (BIQ) House is a 15-unit apartment building located in the German city of Hamburg. It has 129 algae filled louvered tanks which hang over the exterior of the south-east and south-west sides of the building. These tanks of algae power the entire building.

Casa Pentimento, located in Ecuador, was designed by architects Jose María Sáez and David Barragán. This prefab home uses 900 LEGO-like, pre-cast, concrete blocks. The 40-inch-long locks are layered, one side creates a flat wall and the other side is notched, creating built-ins, such as shelves, planters, stairs, fences and walls.

Facebook’s New Green Roof

Facebook’s huge addition to their headquarters in Menlo Park California is complete with a full-on green roof. However this green roof is no ordinary green roof. Designed by starchitect Frank Gehry, it is more park-like (spanning some 400,000 square feet), complete with oak trees, walking trail and café kiosks.

Berkshire Co-Op Plans Major Expansion

The Berkshire Co-Op has outgrown its 4,500 square foot space and plans to relocate to a new location, down the street. The site is the former location of the New England Log Homes factory and is considered to be highly contaminated with pollutants. However, the development plan includes a complete clean-up of the site. Options for the clean-up included removal of the waste ($20 million), capping the polluted area ($7 million) or the exciting prospect of using bio-remediation to clean the site. Bio-remediation is the process of using naturally occurring organisms, which break down and absorb the toxins at a very quick rate, eliminating toxins from the soil.

Berkshire Co-op Announces Move

The Berkshire Co-Op has announced that it's moving. Its new home will be located at the former New England Log Homes factory, which is directly down the street from its current location. The proposed land contains pollutants and is considered a brownfield site. The new eight-acre location will be cleaned up and include an expanded Berkshire Co-op Market, residential housing and a recreational project, which would include a two-acre Housatonic River waterfront park. It will be a $30 million redevelopment project.

The new Iredale Mineral Cosmetics headquarters is being developed through the adaptive reuse of the former Bryant School in Great Barrington. The building shell has been gutted and reinforced to bring the building into compliance with the current building code. The hip framed roof has been expanded to the East, creating new office space where a flat roof had once been. Previously attic space, the third floor roof is now equipped with 8 new dormers to allow for an abundance of natural light to flow into the new and improved space.

Iredale Mineral Cosmetics - New Headquarters Progress

The adaptive reuse of the former Bryant School building, built in 1889, into the new headquarters of the Iredale Cosmetics Company is on schedule. The old roof has been removed and new structural steel has been installed to support an entirely new roof structure converting the former attic into Class A office space. The foundations for the new glass elevator tower are complete and ready for structural steel and glass walls, allowing for visitors to view the East Mountains across the Housatonic River as they ride the elevator from the lower level to the new third floor of this beautiful 1800's building.

‘Sunbelievable’ Solar Paint

Imagine being able to power your appliances via solar paint? And we all thought that the best way to go green with paint was sticking with zero VOC’s!

According to the Huffington Post, developers at the University of Notre Dame believe that green homeowners may be able to say hello to a new paint that can generate electricity via ‘power-producing nanoparticles.’ The paint looks no different than any other type of paint and may be able to be made in large quantities at a low cost. When hit by light, the particles are believed to produce small amounts of electricity that researchers hope can be magnified enough to power home appliances. Although still far behind the efficiency of solar panels, if improved, can this 'Sunbelievable' paint be a new wave of the future? Only time will tell.
